amount of women filmmakers and photographers are growing. I wanted to design for this space and really think about what does this growing body of athletes need.&nbsp; HOW MIGHT WE DESIGN BACKCOUNTRY SKI EQUIPMENT FOR FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHERS AND FILMMAKERS TO PERFORM THEIR JOBS MORE EFFECTIVELY WITHOUT HAVING TO SACRIFICE THEIR OWN SAFETY? I conducted one-on-one interviews with 10+ athletes and learned what they valued the most. Safety was one of the biggest things that they spoke about because they were often sacrificing their safety for their camera gear. This led me to the concept of wearable equipment. In the performance world now people are looking for ways to have their gear as close to body as possible - as seen in running vests, bikepacking bags, fly fishing vests - list goes on. How can this same concept be applied to backcountry filmmakers? The research led me think how to design a better system for the athletes. I ultimately settled with the idea of having a modular vest and pack system. The vest carries all the safety equipment so that it can be on body at all times. For my final intern project, I wanted to follow my ikigai. Something our VP of Accessories, Dennis Wang, would always refer to. Your ikigai is the Japanese secret to a joyful life. It means “your reason for being”.&nbsp; With freedom to choose whatever I wanted to design for my project, I wanted to choose something that overlapped with my personal interests, lululemon’s core values, and what the world needs.&nbsp; Through research of lululemon’s values and what I had experienced from a summer working at the company, I came to the conclusion to design for the global movement: Plogging. It overlapped with lululemon’s core values of personal responsibility, courage, fun, and Be Planet. 01 RESEARCH So what exactly is plogging and what does a plogger need? Plogging is a combination of jogging and picking up litter. It merges two different Swedish words. It started as a movement in 2016 in Sweden and began to spread to other countries in 2018 with the increased concern in plastic pollution. An estimated 2,000,000 people plog daily in 100 countries and some plogging events have attracted over 3,000,000 participants. plocka up (pick up) + jogga (jog) = plogga (plogging) I took to the streets of Vancouver myself, and went plogging just to fully understand the experience. Attachment of the bag to the vest was also very important, so I spent a lot of time prototyping how that attachment would look, exploring the vast trim library that lululemon had to offer. It is designed to facilitate innovative, environmentally-considerate product solutions for the sports and performance market, by harnessing the unique natural properties of Australian Merino wool. The challenge also provides a unique learning experience for participants and awards the finalists and winners with opportunities for international travel, financial rewards, and potential for career development. This was my entry into the 2022 Woolmark Challenge where the prompt was to explore how wool can be used in the ultramarathon trail running industry. The focus is on material exploration and innovation. Because of my background in snowboarding, I wanted to focus on snowboard cross athletes.&nbsp; Because SB-LL1 and SB-LL2 athletes have to wear a prosthetic, their racing apparel looks very similar to typical snowboard athletes. Exploration of this cave began in the 1980s. Rob Stone is leading a team of highly skilled climbing and caving experts to uncover, what they believe, to be the deepest cave in the world. The conditions inside this cave are ruthless, cold, wet, and unlike anything experienced on land. The team needs highly specific gear that will allow them to push further and deeper into the unknown conditions of the cave as they spend days on end under the surface of the earth exploring How can System Cheve exploration equipment be better designed to optimize equipment transportation logistics? With their current equipment, the pushers had to remove items from their bag and put it into a separate bag to fit through the small spaces in the Squeezelands. This was inconvenient&nbsp; and a time suck for the cavers. My design solution features strengths taken from cayoneering packs to allow for the bag to fit through small spaces. Everything in the bag is fit into those plastic Curtec or Nalgene containers as pictured of. This waterproofs the contents inside. The bag just needed to be able to be carried and hauled through the cave, withstanding the conditions. My concept for the bag was a double bag system that was connected by the shoulder straps. When the cavers reached an area where the bag needed to become smaller, the caver would remove the carabiners to allow the bag to reduce to the single bag size to be able to shove through spaces
